Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) graduate student Rajeev Yasarla and ECE Associate Professor Vishal Patel have won the best paper award at the 2021 IEEE International Conference on Image Processing (ICIP) for their paper titled “Learning to Restore Images Degraded by Atmospheric Turbulence Using Uncertainty.” In the paper, Yasarla and Patel – who is a member of CLSP – have developed a deep learning-based approach for restoring a single image degraded by atmospheric turbulence. Applications of this research include long-range surveillance, autonomous navigation, and biometrics.

The IEEE ICIP is the world’s largest and most comprehensive technical conference focused on image and video processing and computer vision. ICIP features world-class speakers, tutorials, and industry sessions, and creates an excellent forum to foster innovation and entrepreneurship, and network with the brightest minds in academia and industry that are working in this field.
