Rebecca Resnik (Rebecca Resnik and Associates LLC) – “Transmissions from the Black Box: How human emotion impacts cognition, language, and behavior”

Previously, science conceived of emotions as ‘bugs’ in an otherwise exceptional computational system, the human brain. Recent discoveries from neuroscience reveal that emotions are not ‘bugs’ at all, but integral ‘features’ of human cognition. This talk focuses on how emotions manifest, both to the observer, and to the self, and includes discussion of the function of emotions, as well as how emotions impact cognition, language, and behavior.

Dr. Rebecca Resnik, Licensed Psychologist, was one of the co-organizers of the first CLPsych workshop at ACL. She is interested in the potential of computational linguistics to improve risk-assessment, diagnosis, and access to mental heath care. Dr. Resnik is a clinical psychologist in private practice who specializes in neuropsychological assessment. She is founder of Rebecca Resnik and Associates, LLC, with offices in Bethesda and Rockville, Maryland.  She has served for five years as a voting member of the Maryland Psychological Association’s Board of Directors.
