Abstract
We report progress on a new approach to combating illiteracy — getting computers to listen to children read. We describe a prototype automated coach for oral reading. It displays a story on the screen, listens as a child reads it aloud, and decides whether and how to intervene. This talk will update the results presented in our AAAI94 Outstanding Paper.Joint work with Alex Hauptmann, Steven Roth, Matthew Kane, and Maxine Eskenazi.
