Newcomers to speech recognition first learn how to recognize from a four-word vocabulary by reading spectrograms, then they learn how to train simple triphone-based HMMs for the four words so the same test data can be recognized by standard dynamic-programming techniques. The software for the talk, which was written many years ago before even VGA became available on PCs, illustrates how to display readable speech spectrograms using CGA technology.
