Abstract:
This lecture will cover the basic acoustic properties of the speech sounds of American English. Students will learn the production mechanisms, and acoustic properties of each of the major classes of speech sounds, and will learn how these properties are manifested on spectrograms. The lecture will include many examples of labelled and unlabelled spectrograms, and will give attendees plenty of practice applying their acoustic phonetic knowledge to spectrographic analysis. By the end of the lecture and associated laboratory, students should be able to look at a spectrogram of an utterance, and perform at least a broad phonetic transcription, or identify where gross mistakes occur in an existing transcription.
