Title: The Industry of Spoken Dialog: What it Takes to Build Applications that Work and Sell.
Speaker: Roberto Pieraccini (SpeechCycle, Inc.)

Abstract:
Research has developed interesting and powerful technologies that can potentially expand the scope and the sophistication of human-machine communication by voice. However, the commercial exploitation of these technologies has to face the realities imposed by cost effective development, business models, customer requirements, and user acceptance. This talk focuses on the technological issues related to the sustainability, scalability, and growth of a spoken dialog industry. It also describes the evolution from the first generation of applications to the current third generation, or Speech 3.0.
