Title: Introduction to Dialogue Management and Evaluation
Speaker: Tim Paek (Microsoft Research)

Abstract:
Once a spoken utterance is recognized and interpreted, designing an effective user interaction with a spoken dialogue system still requires two important considerations: first, dialogue management, which concerns what actions the system should take in light of its observations and inferred beliefs, and second, dialogue evaluation, which concerns how the effect of those actions on performance should be measured and compared with those of other systems. This lecture will introduce and survey approaches to both topics from a research perspective, including recent statistical approaches such as reinforcement learning.
