Statistical Machine Translation: Approaches and Open Problems: Daniel Marcu - 07/03/2002

slides from Daniel Marcu's lecture (.pdf format)

  • Abstract:

At the beginning of the nineties, the first attempts to translate natural language sentences using statistical models trained on large amounts of bilingual corpora were received with skepticism. Today, statistical approaches to machine translation have become the dominant paradigm in the field. In this lecture, I will overview some of the most representative approaches and trends, and discuss related challenges and open problems.
