The Power of Integration in Language Processing

Language processing is a rich field with several very influential sub-fields like Speech Recognition, Information Retrieval, and NLP. Each of these sub-fields have had tremendous research contributions in the past, and they continue to be vibrant areas of research. This talk argues that integrating these sub-fields not only yields powerful new application, it also yields very interesting and challenging research problems. A large part of this talk will be devoted to two demonstrations: a speech search engine SCAN, and a web-based question answering system AQUA, that we have developed based on such technology integration.
