"I believe that in this decade we will see ... that most ordinary questions
can be answered by reference to online materials rather than paper materials
... Where we will need research is in the handling of images, sounds and
video."
To come closer to achieving that, the Center for Language and Speech
Processing (CLSP) at Johns Hopkins University, sponsors an annual workshop
which allows researchers in computational linguistics to advance the state
of the art.
In the summer of 2000, the MEI project
team plans to study and test theories in audio indexing, translingual retrieval,
and machine translation.
MEI (which means
beautiful in Chinese) participants will try to develop and improve a system
whereby English speakers can find audio broadcasts in Mandarin Chinese
relevant to their interests, without knowing Chinese.
This page will keep you informed about our progress
and give us a place to meet and keep each other up-to-date. |
