In 1994, after filming Schindler's List, Steven Spielberg established Survivors of the Shoah Visual History Foundation with an urgent mission: to videotape and preserve the testimonies of Holocaust survivors and witnesses. Today, the Shoah Foundation has collected more than 50,000 eyewitness testimonies in 57 countries and 32 languages, and is committed to ensuring the broad and effective educational use of its archive worldwide. The Shoah Foundation has built a 180 Tera-Byte database from the digitized testimonies and is in the process of cataloging those testimonies using analysts with historical and political science backgrounds. Technologies for disseminating the archive and automating some of the manual processes involved in cataloging the testimonies are a few of the Shoah Foundation's current efforts and the topic of this talk.Biographical Information
