10:00am LM95 Guest Lecture, David Sadek, CNET/France Telecom
TITLE: Rational Interaction as the Basis for Dialogue Modelling:
Application to the AGS Cooperative Spoken Dialogue System
PLACE: Barton 117

Abstract:

Dialogue requires various complex abilities such as signal (or language)
perception and production, learning, reasoning, or understanding. These
abilities are also required by other so-called "intelligent" behaviors,
namely problem solving behaviors. In this view, dialogue is not a primitive
activity. Rather, it relies on basic principles of rational action,
which are more primitive than conversational rules.

The main components of a theory of rational interaction will be introduced.
The theory is expressed in a formal framework of a logic for
mental attitudes (such as belief and intention) and action.
It will be shown how communicative acts and cooperation properties can
be stated in this framework, and how dialogue abilities naturally derives
from the theory.

Then, an operational cooperative spoken dialogue system working
on a real application (AGS) relying on the approach introduced before
will be presented. This system displays several features of intelligent
user-friendly dialogue: flexible input, non-directive interaction,
request negotiation, cooperative answers, etc. Thus, it demonstrates
the effectiveness of the adopted approach.
