Admissions: Fellowships

The Whiting School of Engineering at the Johns Hopkins University invites applications from outstanding students seeking research experience at the Ph.D. level who are interested in exploring areas within the context of the six science and engineering departments(see list above for home departments) affiliated with CLSP. These fellowships provide a monthly stipend and complete tuition remission for the first year of graduate study towards a doctoral degree. For the remainder of their doctoral program, recipients may apply for either a renewal of support through the fellowship or a graduate assistantship from their research supervisors or home department.

CLSP invites applications from all candidates including those with degrees in mathematics, physics and other analytical sciences.

Fellowship recipients, in addition to performing graduate research in language or speech processing, must satisfy the academic requirements of their home department.

Terms of the Fellowship

• Each fellowship will be awarded for a period of one academic year.
• The fellowship will provide a 9 month stipend and a full tuition waiver for the year.
• CLSP will provide the recipient an opportunity to engage in a summer internship with a leading industrial research laboratory or to participate in the research workshop on Language Engineering conducted at Johns Hopkins University in the summer.
• More than one fellowship may be awarded in an academic year, at the discretion of the director of CLSP.

Eligibility Requirements

• The recipient must be accepted into a doctoral program in one of the six departments affiliated with CLSP.
• Fellowships are intended primarily for incoming students who wish to pursue research in speech or language processing. However, students who are currently enrolled in the doctoral program are also eligible.
• Students currently receiving the fellowship are not precluded from award of the fellowship in subsequent years.

Application

• Applicants must submit a completed Johns Hopkins University Graduate Admission form to the prospective home department (see list of participating departments). (Not applicable to current graduate students.) and indicate on the application that they wish to be considered for the fellowship. A brief statement of research interests in language or speech processing should also be included.
• A member of the CLSP faculty may also nominate prospective or currently enrolled students for consideration. (This is to include applicants who may be unaware of the fellowship. The fact that the applicant has been so nominated will not be a discriminating factor in the evaluation or selection.)
• To be considered for the fellowship commencing in the Fall semester, the deadline for application will be January 1^st of the same year.
• Applicants may be invited for an interview at Johns Hopkins University.

Evaluation and Selection

• Fellowships will be awarded by a committee consisting of at least 4 members of the CLSP faculty, appointed by the director of CLSP.
• Merit evaluation will be based on a student's
  • previous academic record (transcripts),
  • GRE scores,
  • statement(s) of research interests, and
  • letters of recommendation
  contained in the student's primary admissions application. The applicant's home department(see list above for home departments) will provide these to the awards committee and duplicate copies will not be required from the applicant.
• CLSP invites applications from all candidates including those with degrees in mathematics, physics and other analytical sciences.
